The first release for new record label Make Mine Music is the imaginatively-titled 'Split'. It features Yellow6 and Portal who share the first four tracks between their respective monikers and then Jon Attwood (who is Yellow6 in all but name) and Portal's Scott Sinfield collaborate on the final four compositions. Portal contribute the only vocal track; Rachel Hughes's countryesque timbre sits neatly atop the soporific electro-beat of 'Hold'. Yet it's Yellow6 who provides the real masterstroke; his 'The Sinking Sun' is one of the most stunning offerings he has yet produced; a soothing piano offering an oasis of calm against the backdrop of a howling windy nightmare. The joint efforts recall more Yellow6 rather than Portal (although the two are clearly reading from the same hymn sheet) with #4 pointing to Attwood's often-used influences of mid-80s Cocteau Twins. These elegant, glacial recordings already suggest that Make Mine are on to a good thing.
