Not long since the reissues of the first two Ultramarine on LTM records, comes 'Companion', a viable collection of remixes and alternative versions of their landmark debut album 'Every Man And Woman Is A Star'. Much of the reworking is provided by the duo themselves but lesser-known talents offer interesting slants on this already sterling work. Although some of the starry-eyed innocence of the original versions is lost, the addition of house beats makes this selection the ideal bedfellow for the Beloved's chil-out staple 'Happiness'. The thunderous drum beats that usher in Coco Steel and Lovebomb's version of 'Panther' is starkly similar to the sound of The Simeon machine from the 60's electro-pioneers Silver Apples. 'Early Discovery' predates the ethereality of Boards Of Canada whilst an edit version of 'Stella' - one of their best songs - is magically hypnotic. For fans of the original album these versions are different enough to warrant investment; most tracks are different and interesting enough to add value to the benchmark album.
