Marianas are three gentlemen from Lincoln, Nebraska; an area more famed for country music than the ambient and post-rock music which they deliver on their debut recording. The trio wear their influences quite clearly but have a gravitas and warmth that should not be dismissed. From the quiet-period Mogwai guitar textures of 'We Were Safe, Now We're Sorry' and 'The Simple Things' to the Hood-like atmospherics of 'In Louvre' Marianas show they have learned well from their more famous contemporaries. The best track, however, is 'My Body Is A Sail' where Ryan Dee's distracted maudlin vocals sit neatly over acoustic guitar and programmed beats; tellingly it isn't so easy to compare it with other bands' work which is surely a good sign for the future. 'Onward + Upward' is a quietly persuasive album.
