With a multitude of compilations and singles already behind them, Yorkshire's premier rustic miserablists have helpfully provided three CDs worth of singles and compilation contributions which save the need for frantic searching for giveaway CDs. The compilation tracks are typically varied in terms of quality of production and style. On the one hand there are superb ambient pieces like 'Lo Band Width'and emotive Yellow6 pastiches like 'A Shot Across The Bow' then there are deliberate lo-fi punk jokes like 'Attempts To Revive The Victim Failed', meanwhile 'Aube Remix' and 'Redundant' are best described as electronic experiments. Somewhere in-between there are wonderful morose melodies of 'Sound The Cliche Claxons' and 'You Should Never Feel Alone In This World'. If further evidence of high standards were needed, 'The Treacherous Mytholm Steeps' and 'I Have It In My Heart To Jump Into The Ocean' could have easily made it on to the 'Cycle Of Days And Seasons' album; they even boast the suitably depressing titles required. In typically self-effacing style the group pick holes in many of these excellent tracks in the sleevenotes but the high quality of what - in effect - are just freebies, provide an output that will be the envy of many of their contemporaries.
