"Mid-week mid-afternoon murder mystery music" is a remarkably apt description for Mark Tranmer's work under the name of Gnac. For, in between being one half of The Montgolfier Brothers, Tranmer's instrumental music possesses a quaint air of nostalgia more in tune with the tea rooms of an Agatha Christie novel than more fashionable pasttimes. Naturally, it can be kind of kitschy but usually Tranmer sprinkles his tunes with an evocative theme; whether it's a day at the fairground ('From Cougorge To Gougougnac'), a crime in a stately home ('Midgley Moor') or just a tangible sense of loss ('Observed Vs Expected'). Moreover, Tranmer manages to achieve what many would have thought impossible: making a form of easy listening that is both intelligent and strangely compelling and 'Twelve Sidelong Glances' is his most consistent offering yet.
