On paper, Whiskycats sound like an ill-advised experiment. Five classically trained musicians - including members named Piers and Felix - with a penchant for uplifting latin jazz music. Amazingly, the formula works extremely well and is infectious rather than irritating. Each of the three tracks is tuneful and the band play with such an unforced positivity it's hard not to smile. Matthew Whittaker's vocals are full of doleful, twinkling charm, 'Boring Job' features the welcome addition of Tijuana brass and 'Acoustic Night' adds layers of warmth to the post-club vibe. Infact, anyone who criticises jazz music for being indulgent and uninteresting would be well advised to check out this lively Mancunian outfit.
