The Double Life Of Véronique's debut effort is described on the press release to be "as much about texture and colour as it is about melody or harmony exploring the parallels between visual art and music". Cue 50 minutes of extreme minimalist drone music consisting of various guitar effects (bowing, metal and wooden doweling). The improvisational nature of the music is superficially beautiful but ultimately unrewarding with tones varying little from the start of one 10 minute piece to the end. The formula works best on 'Cochineal' which recalls the fragmented beauty of Bark Psychosis's 'Hex' album; significantly it's the shortest track. One can commend David Bennett for the obviously clever techniques used in constructing this piece of work but 'Avec Un Pessimisme Lucide' lacks enough variety to suggest anything more than a victory for style over substance.
