The brainchild of one Stephen Coates, (The Real) Tuesday Weld is one man's warped, highly imaginative vision which merges sounds from the beginning and the end of the last century. It's a world where modern hip-hop is allied with the dance hall ('I Love The Rain') and Gerschwin meets blues guitar and vocoder on the brilliant 'Terminally Ambivalent Over You'. The dominant mood is one of heady romance with dreamy instrumental interludes neatly separating each 'proper' song. Breaking the laid-back spell is the relatively pounding groove on 'L'amour Et La Mort' that nods in the direction of the equally talented Experimental Pop Band. It can't just be a coincidence that not only does Stephen Coates possesses that same love-fuelled, slightly fey style as Scritti Politti but they also share a remarkably similar album name. That aside though, Coates is a true original.
