'Svefn-g-englar' is the original EP which first brought the Icelandic conglomerate Sigur Ros to a UK audience. Its re-release is timely as it allows a quick reassessment of this deeply original music. The title track was stunning then and still is now like an evocation of a beautiful dream or - for those who want more tangible comparisons - My Bloody Valentine slowed to a snail's pace. Another track featured on this EP and its attendant album is 'Viorar Vel Til Loftarasa' which is a fine, near-classical piece in its own right and not only because it's ten minutes long. The other two tracks - not included on 'Agaetis Byrjun' but certainly wouldn't have seemed out of place on it - were recorded live at the Icelandic Opera House. This must have been a rather fitting venue for such a unique talent.
