Yet another band to exhume the spirit of My Bloody Valentine, Spotlight Kid are a new band built around the duo of ex-Six.By Seven drummer Chris Davis and former Bent vocalist Katty Heath. Initially they seem to have imitated Kevin Shields' group to such a fine art, it sounds like 'Depature' could feasibly be that elusive third album they never quite managed to produce. Indeed, 'Never's Too Soon' is probably the best pastiche of MBV's grunge-pop style since Cornelius' 'New Music Machine'. Similarly, 'Can't Let Go' is built around a familiar malestrom of guitar effects and sighed harmonies whilst 'Electric Forecast' recalls the busy sounds of Broken Social Scene. Unsurprisingly, it takes a while for Spotlight Kid to establish their own identity but when they do - as on the elegantly-constructed 'Liquid Coloured' or the groove-heavy 'Seefeel' - they prove to be more than just good imitators. So, along with The Sky Drops, Spotlight Kid offer further evidence that the shoegazing scene hasn't quite died yet.
