Once again taking quiet-loud music to its extremes, 'Rock Action' demonstrates that whilst the group haven't deserted their obsession with sprawling guitar anthems they are learning to be more concise as 8 tracks take up less than 40 minutes. That's not necessarily a good thing though; 'CODY' was exhausting in the best way possible, to put it simply on this album the overall quality isn't quite as high. It certainly contains beautiful moments, 'Take Me Somewhere Nice' is probably the best track they've ever produced featuring their own vocals and subtle strings, it stands up well against Bark Psychosis's finest work. Another vocal-led track, sung in Welsh by Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys also impresses. Then there's 'You Don't Know Jesus', a gruelling, pounding mish-mash of percussion and relentless guitars that defines the term 'hard work'; it's good but doesn't have enough ideas on it to justify its 8-minute length. '2 Rights Make 1 Wrong' is far better; it's immense and epic sounding in the same way as Godspeed You Black Emperor. With 3 extremely short tracks this is almost a mini album; it impresses at times but after a 2-year gap a little more was expected of Mogwai.
