No doubt about it, Paparazzi Whore are merchants of shock tactics. Firstly, their name and album title seeks no explanation, their songs deal quite graphically with drug addiction and sex whilst their image suggests Altered Images in a fight with Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Their sound is also markedly informed by the 1980s, embracing synth washes and chugging guitars topped off with frontwoman Micci's shouted vocals. A few songs in, the energy and willingness to adopt recognisable verses and choruses serves them well (the distorted 'I'll Be Your Boyfriend' being the highlight) but then as the album draws on, it becomes apparent they are perhaps a one-trick pony after all. It's easy to imagine that on the live circuit they're probably an exciting, visceral proposition but on record their "in your face" attitude doesn't translate quite so well.
