Although not quite as soppy as their name might suggest, LA-based Lovely are a group who wear their hearts on their sleeve with their own brand of optimistic power pop. The duo of Johnny Vergara and Aditya Rao clearly strive for melody in both their guitar playing and strong vocals. Their big moment occurs three tracks in with 'Dear'; from its ringing intro to the key changes in the singing, they show that they can reach pop's holy grail. That nothing quite matches this song is testament to how good it actually is rather than how ordinary the rest of their material may be. Far from it, as 'No Need' features another great vocal and 'Sunside' is capable of capturing Summer even when listening to it in the cold Winter months. A promising beginning from a band who offer a positive outlook without being irritating.
