Briefly, The House Of Love were the leading lights of the indie rock movement in the late 80's. Although they carried on for a few years after that, general consensus states that the work culled from their early period remains their most impressive; crucially this may well have been caused by the inclusion of guitarist Terry Bickers. Bickers' guitar work elevated the group from indie also-rans to leading lights and this compilation of Peel Sessions demonstrates his power to full effect. 'Don't Turn Blue' and 'Plastic' emphasise his more languid style whilst 'Safe' and 'The Hedonist' showcases delightful, dreamy guitar patterns; even the comparatively insipid 'The Beatles And The Stones' sounds far more vigourous than the album cut. As a body of work this actually has more worth than the rather patchy albums they produced.
