There's few more frustrating experiences for music fanatics when their favourite band splits up due to irreconcilable differences. Yet there always remains the hope that eventually those differences will be resolved. It happened last year with Tears For Fears and now The House Of Love's two creative lynchpins have reunited in an unlikely comeback. However, Terry Bickers and Guy Chadwick's return is far more modest; made up of low production values which often create the atmosphere of an early-60s beat group. This approach works wonderfully on the classic melodicism of 'Gotta Be That Way', 'Maybe You Know' and 'Kinda Love' but the simplistic style of 'Already Gone' and 'Saved' makes them sound more like demos. It's disappointing to find little evidence of Bickers' trademark ringing, swirling guitar patterns although Chadwick's haunting croon has retained its charm. All in all, a strangely muted yet dignified comeback with glimpses of the old magic.
