This is the sound of eccentric American experimentalism. 'The Broken Down Comforter Collection' compilation contains some of Grandaddy's earlier EPs and it is probably nearest in sound to Scotland's The Beta Band. The vocals are deliberately slightly demented and the song titles match this ('Kim You Bore Me To Death' and 'Sikh In A Baja VW Bug' being prime candidates). Whilst, as you'd expect, sounding too clever by half at times, there are moments of real beauty on this CD; most notably 'Gentle Spike Resort', 'Away Birdies With Special Sounds', 'Taster' and 'Levitz'.
