It's hard to know what to make of the Glimmer Kids on first impressions. Their sharp clothes and trendy hairstyles suggest some kind of electro-clash hybrid which, as it happens, isn't too far from the truth. The duo of singer/writer Jimm Glimm and multi-instrumentalist "Simon" certainly show a fondness for a synth tune but the songs are strengthened by some diamond-sharp guitar. The formula works a treat on 'My Little Sin' and 'Alive'; both are hook-filled stylish glam-rock/pop songs but it's really the guitar work which adds the edginess required. Furthermore, on 'Stars Turned On', comparisons are offered to Nirvana's 'Lithium' but the cover of The Cars' 'Just What I Needed' is - perversely - perhaps the way forward. In fact it would be interesting to see what noises this band would make if they disposed of the synths altogether and pursued their new wave interests a little further. For now, though, we'll settle for this smartly produced debut.
