As if in a deliberate bid to avoid commercial success, the latest in a long line of Bristol bands, Chikinki, unleash a cavalcade of heavily distorted vocals, howling guitars and some trip-hop effects for good measure. Despite all this (or maybe because of?) it's a great track which has the same twisted sense of melody that Dawn Of The Replicants possessed in their heyday. A noticeable shift in tone occurs then as main vocalist Rupert (four of the group actually take on this role) lends more soulful, human vocals to proceedings. The real strength of 'Experiment With Mother' is that it retains a claustrophobic, seedy edge whilist many trip-hop acts sound like mere Portishead copyists. There are also weird moments of beautifully warped melody which stand out notably on 'Lucky' and 'Bombs'.All the evidence points to them being more than just another band from Bristol.
