'Wilder' from 1981 sees the group veering off into more subversive territory; in fact to all intents and purposes this could be referred to as Julian Cope's first solo album with all words and music credited to the singer himself. Keyboards are also prominent and the post-punk edge has been replaced by psychedelia and an unwillingness to create arresting tunes, save the single 'Passionate Friend'. The sinister sparseness of the likes of 'Tiny Children' and 'The Great Dominions' provide further fine moments. That apart, this is quintessentially English music with nods to Scott Walker and British psychedelia but it sadly lacks the energetic impact and determined focus of 'Kilimanjaro'.
