Understanding that if you're going to dig up the past, then you also have to acknowledge the present to be successful, Violet Nine combine 80s hard rock vocals with the brittle guitars and reverb-heavy production of the present day. In this way, 'Any Wonder' sounds very polished, hook-heavy and full of passion. All the right boxes are ticked for soaring anthems ('Yell It Out'), introspective melancholia ('Leaving Rain') and the requisite big finale ('Hope'). Although in truth, the record is full of big moments where most of the songs are potential singles. One has a feeling there'll be heard on commercial radio stations over here very soon and that's no bad thing for this is the acceptable face of FM rock.
