So much praise was heaped on The Rapture but ultimately they disappointed because of a lack of melody in their disco-inflected punk-funk sound. Tom Vek is probably too awkward a character to lure the indie crowd to the dancefloor but he does have the tunes as well as the invention to succeed where others have fallen short. From the hypnotic drums and dreamy sonic patterns of 'C-C (You Set The Fire In Me)' it is clear that Vek is no ordinary talent and from there he continues as drum and bass collides with funk ('A Little Word In Your Ear') whilst other sonic collages like 'If I Had Changed My Mind' resemble Disco Inferno at their most approachable. If there's a criticism it would have to be that the second half of the record is less dynamic but that's only because of the excellence which precedes it. For this is a flawed record but easily one of the most exciting releases of 2005.
