After another prolonged period of inactivity, a remix album could have hardly enthralled the Kraftwerk faithful. For so long the group which had given so much to electronic music was now taking others' ideas, embedding techno into new versions of some of their most famous songs. The results aren't as pointless as you might imagine. The formerly dark 'Computer Love' has evolved into danceable electro-pop and the version of 'Pocket Calculator' is fun and frisky making up a respectable first half. Yet it's the second half which wins out by virtue of its ability to enhance rather than diminish the melancholic elements to their music. 'Radioactivity' features a thrilling portentous finale whereas the 'Trans Europe Express/Abzug/Metal On Metal' sequence modernises whilst maintaining the intensity of the originals. It may be a surprise to say this but 'The Mix' is arguably the pick of the last three albums.
