ReadyToGoUnder

Album Reviews
TaughtMe is the brainchild of Blake Henderson, one of the leading lights of Utah-based label Exumbrella. Infact his 'ReadyToGoUnder' record is a brainchild in more ways than one as Henderson assumes the role of a minor; playful and experimental in terms of lyrics and instrumentation. Granted this youthful sounding work seems initially to be a collection of half-formed ideas; a mish-mash of plaintive vocals and pretentious chorus-less experiments. However, perseverance is eventually rewarded as the appealing nature of 'ThingsThatReallyMatter' and 'Hide 'N' Seek' build an emotional connection from a heady mix of acoustic guitar and bubbling electronica. The comparatively straightforward melody of 'More' is the clearest indication that Bjork is an influence although overall these songs relate more to another Icelandic maverick, Eberg. Intriguingly, whilst many dreampop acts end their songs with shimmering vapour trails, Henderson often chooses to begin his songs this way; creating a rather unique sound in the process. Making this one of those rare cases where growing up is not necessarily the best option.
