'Son De Mar' is the first release from Piano Magic since they signed up to the 4AD record label. Bigas Luna chose the group after being inspired by much of their earlier work and the group have delivered a soundtrack that finds beauty in misery or misery in beauty. Interspersed with crashing waves, clock chimes are replaced by piano and viola and then back to clocks again. Even at 40 minutes it's unremittingly morose and haunting making it quite a challenging listen without having the benefit of watching the film to separate these pieces up. What 'Son De Mar' does demonstrate, however, is another string to the bow of Glen Johnson's collective as they stretch their musical template still further.
