Don't read too much into the cover art of Shaheen Sheik's first full-length album. The title 'Rock Candy' and its cutesy cover may suggest that she is the latest "pop princess" for the younger generation but closer examination reveals her to be a versatile talent. Indeed, after perfecting her craft on acoustic guitar, Shaheen's CV has been littered with songwriting awards. As it's a debut, 'Rock Candy' can be a bit hit-and-miss with one or two songs veering towards safe but bland arrangements. Shaheen's gifts are more evident when she takes risks and experiments. Whilst 'Wildflower World' and 'Salt March' balance pop-rock with hypnotic Asian sounds, Shaheen stretches herself emotionally with the quality yearning ballad 'Goodbye'. Elsewhere, 'Table For Two' and 'Here And Now' demonstrate her commercial appeal with some instantly catchy choruses. All of which makes Shaheen one to watch for the future.
