Although clearly taking cues from Eels in both vocal performance and songwriting, Satellite's Jonny Green has provided a more optimistic take on Mark E. Everett's generally bleak vision. This approach hits as many times as it misses. 'Can You Hear The Sound?', 'Ooh La La' and 'Please Don't Turn Your Back On Me' are buoyant, tuneful numbers that signal an endearing talent but sometimes Green's easy-to-please style threatens to veer towards the over-cutesy, 'Out Of Luck' being the prime example and lazy lyrics such as "Call on the cops 'cos there's a madman in your house" would even cause Robbie Williams to balk. Much better is Green's emotionally ravaged performance on the title track or his cigarette smoker's rasp on the finale 'God Knows'; a route more indicative of someone who isn't just hellbent on cornering the popular market. A typically flawed debut but a successful honing of Green's ideas and spirit should see him fly through the next examination.
