London-based ReCoup are more famous for their live shows than their recorded material. So much so in fact that 'Worthwhile' represents their debut album after three years performing to audiences. Perhaps suprisingly for a group committed to club-friendly electronic music, their first attempt at cutting their ideas to disc is compelling stuff indeed. Part of the reason is because they incorporate real drums and guitars into their work but more importantly, they produce proper songs and employ a vocalist, Pieter Theron, whose downbeat vocals contrast nicely with the upbeat instrumentation. In this way, a track called 'Thunderground' is more reminiscent of The Beloved or The Pet Shop Boys than any modern exponent of the genre and it's all the better for it. Likewise, 'Understand Me' and the title track emphasise ReCoup's strength with a melodic hook. The result is that rare thing: club music with a genuine sense of humanity.
