New Boston quartet Protokoll are possibly Massachusetts' answer to Interpol. Successfully applying their ear for a new wave melody to a much eerier post-punk background, it's a formula which has that all-important crossover appeal. Pick of the bunch is 'Holy Divine' where shimmering synths provide the reverberating platform for frontman Jose Lara to do his best Pete Murphy impression. Equally compelling, though, is the disco-funk of 'Sunken' and the surging 'Moving Forward'. The final two tracks don't quite maintain the momentum but this is a band who show an understanding of the most revered goth outfits whilst still keeping their finger firmly on the pulse of pop music.
