Pram are one of those mercurial bands who operate in a place that seems familiar yet somehow elusive. 'Dark Island' is basically a concept album about an imaginary island inhabited by ghosts. It befits the music very well for Pram are just as keen to use toy instruments as they are to employ Rosie Cuckson's detached folky vocals, creating that same sinister atmosphere inhabited by fellow Birmingham musicians Broadcast, so much so that on their best efforts, ' Penny Arcade', 'Paper Hats' and 'Goodbye' the comparisons are unavoidable. After thirteen years in the business, their insistence on pursuing their chilling fairy tales might have become a little tiresome but with film 'The Wicker Man' and its attendant archaic folk songs, being as popular now as they ever were, 'Dark Island' could easily be the soundtrack to an imaginary sequel.
