It seems quite a while since an album recaptured the magic of the early years of Massive Attack, so it's almost a shock to learn that one album to do it is a Various Artists compilation with contributions from many, as yet, unknown artists. On the surface, 'Towards Nova Zembla' could be viewed as a sampler to the roster of new label Soundseasy but it covers a seamless blend of brooding, soundtrack-worthy instrumentals, superior chill-out, trip-hop and even a spot of beat poetry. Earthed could be the new Tricky thanks to his close-to-the-mic delivery and some smoky trip-hop, The Report To Sorsha aim for the skies with a dreamy piece that resembles that other fine Bristol product, Alpha, whilst the lonely nocturnal sounds of Corsair's 'Flyer' round off a very cohesive and atmospheric package. All told, it's an excellent beginning for this fledgling record label.
