MuddyHead are a Cheshire-based act, chiefly notable for featuring ex-China Crisis man Gary Daly. On this occasion, though, Daly takes a back seat as most of the songwriting credits, singing and guitar playing is performed by Andy Steele. Blessed with the warmest of vocals, Steele makes a likeable frontman even when he struggles manfully to reach the high notes on 'Blameless Life'. In his songwriting approach, Steele picks up reference points from near neighbours from the distant past, including the Beatlesque charms of 'Miracle Cure' and China Crisis themselves on the beautifully lush 'All Manner Of Men' and 'Style It Takes'; the latter's romantic ache being the highlight of the album. Nostalgic but unfashionably so, Steele and co. make tunes which, at their best, are capable of melting the coldest of hearts.
