Along with Levy and Tears In X-Ray Eyes, Chicago's Midstates follow in the tradition of American bands creating an essentially British sound with some rather fey vocals. Yet although these bands are soundalikes, Midstates add a space rock influence and for much of the time, 'Boxing Twilight' is an exercise in strident pop music. Quirky keyboard flourishes, shoegazer-style guitars and exultant choruses carry off 'Didn't Ask' and 'Either Way' and the uncomplicated intimacy of 'Us Explode' is another definite highlight. It's just a shame they don't pull off these tricks on a more consistent basis which means, like their contemporaries, they are merely promising rather than being the finished article.
