Releasing a two-CD compilation after just a couple of albums may seem a little premature but this "odds and sods" collection by London's Lowgold has a lot going for it. Unfairly dismissed in some quarters for their downbeat, slow songs; yet anyone who takes a careful listen will realise that Darren Ford's voice has a rare yearning quality to it whilst the languid guitars are geared more towards optimism than pessimism. Those qualities are all in their best work here ('Every Train', 'Burn A Hole', 'Flavour') but just as evident are faster, more aggressive songs ('Time Reclaims All Frontiers', 'Can't Say No', 'I'd Rather Fuck Up Than Miss Out') which defy lazy pigeon-holing. There's a great single CD to be found here but considering this is a round-up of live, remix and B-side work it also serves as a good introduction to a melodic and very heartfelt compendium of songwriting.
