Does the world need more epic rock bands? Well, according to Longview the answer is an emphatic 'yes'. Their opinion seems well justified on the first two tracks from their first album: 'Further' is a heartbursting, powerful opener and 'Can't Explain' features a similar strong chorus and widescreen sound; just ignore the opening lines of "You know what they say, at the end of the day, but days fade away". After a while the listening experience becomes rather contrived as one attempt to become anthemic follows another but Longview seem unaware that bluster and power does not equal emotional reach. A couple of tracks along the way stem the tide a little: the driving rhythms of 'When You Sleep' and 'Falling For You' which employs a gentler and more considered guitar work. There have been bands who have made worse albums than this and gone on to achieve great things but Longview really need to establish their own identity and some variation on their records.
