Although a relatively small part of the independent music scene, there will always be a special place reserved for jazz and electronica. Following in the slipstream of Poland's Skalpel are Mexican act Kobol who have delivered a thoroughly likeable set of instrumentals ready-made for 2am listens. The title track shares a warmth and melody with Steely Dan whilst 'Delevan' is intense and frenetic; creating images of Ren and Stimpy cartoons. Hats off especially to 'Es Particular' which manages to convey melancholia in its busy electronica. After an accessible first half to the record, the remainder of the album is noticeably less tuneful and more mood based. Nevertheless, in the early hours of the morning, some relaxing background music is probably more than welcome.
