Taking into account the tragic death of Mary Hansen, 2003 turned out to be an understandably quiet year for Stereolab releases. Even so, they still turned out a mini-album 'Instant 0 In The Universe'. This five-track affair doesn't offer much new stylistically but after being perceived as one of the most original and influential bands in recent years, consolidation can be forgiven, especially under the circumstances. For the record, this is a largely pop-centric, tuneful release i.e. not one which reverts to interminable drone rock midway through tracks. The music is also rather upbeat and in the light of recent events the mood of optimism is certainly something Hansen should be remembered for.
