Idioverse are a four-piece from London who have been releasing a steady flow of EPs via their website. With as much emphasis on art and experimentation as the more conventional form of songwriting, their music is difficult to pinpoint at times. After the rather freakish opening of female dialogue and distortion on 'Soupy Girl', the EP really begins with the title track to 'Tiny Liquorice'; an odd mixture of Ben van der Poorten's anguished vocals, a jazzed-up rhythm section and that undeniable feel of angst and alienation. 'Red Buzzer' is similarly tense and features an arresting, screamed chorus fighting to be heard above the relentless percussion; it is at this time that comparisons to The Mars Volta are apparent. Yet it's on the more considered approach to 'Scraping The Paint' where the band really hit form. Some plangent keyboard notes create the sense of despair whilst the steady drumming keeps in check van der Poorten's freeform approach to singing. An intriguing release from a group who have the idiosyncracies to suggest their best is yet to come.
