You wouldn't think it to hear it but 'Coalesced' is actually the fifth album in sixteen years from Nebraska group For Against. For all their Chameleons-style guitar-playing the fresh singing and sense of melody seems like it came from a group of half their age. For Against's distinctive jangly indie-rock sound is bolstered by a multitude of melodic twists and turns and although the Chameleons comparisons are inescapable they aim for a summery sense of euphoria. On the outstanding 'So Long' and the pile-driving ttitle track they convey a tight musicianship and intense emotional strength that the mighty Kitchens of Distinction would be proud of. A change of pace at the conclusion with the introspective 'Shelflife' and the richly-woven guitar tapestry of 'Love You' is another masterstroke. It is something of a travesty that this group isn't more well-known because they sound at the top of their game on this showing.
