Hailing from Boston, USA, Everpresent are a synth pop-rock trio with undeniable 80s influences. Unusually for such a group they incorporate a real drummer rather than the more commonly favoured programmed effort. This factor - along with the surprisingly soulful lyrical matter - adds a human quality to the songs. Everpresent's songs don't always come off; despite including three versions of it on this mini-compilation, 'Silence Speaks' only has a thin melody. There's also the times when the guitar-playing descend into unwelcome squawling territory. On the plus side, however, 'Behind Your Veil' and 'Don't Stop' are much stronger songs and the latter is full of the intense yearning and mystery that songwriter Matthew Cahoon is clearly aiming for. A full album should prove whether or not Everpresent are the real deal but for now they have some potential.
