For his work as a composer, guitarist, producer and sound designer, Erdem Hervacioglu boasts an impressive CV which takes into account numerous concerts, festival appearances and soundtrack commissions, not to mention experience in lecturing and a large selection of recorded works. 'Altered Realities' is his latest album and one which sees the worlds of classical and electro-acoustic combine to sometimes sublime effect.
First up is 'Bridge To Horizon', a peaceful pastoral piece, which fellow cross-genre instrumentalist Vini Reilly would be proud to call his own. However, the record really comes in to its own towards the centre as 'Dreaming On A Blind Saddle' shimmers in sinister fashion, 'Shadow My Dovetail' is enveloped by the swell of rainy day melancholia whilst 'Frozen Resophonic' is an elegant, chiming piece and probably the most addictive track on offer. Only the wayward sounds of 'Sliding On A Glacier' is too experimental to enjoy. Granted, on a few tracks, Helvacioglu fails to strike an emotional chord with the listener but overall he's produced a collection of music which not only works on an artistic level but rewards with repeated plays.
