Shoegazing folk is the order of the day on this new album by Daylight's For The Birds. Generally they dispense sweet tunes rather than the de rigeur wall of sound. On 'For Now', for example, the innocent vocals are in the domain of bands like Stars or even The Field Mice before them. At the centre is the euphoric 'Early Summer' and at the beginning the dreamlike 'To No One' and 'Worlds Away' but it's the deconstructed pop of 'Flicker' that is the real find here. The only problem lies in the shoegazing traps which occur towards the end of the record where too much reliance on effete singing leads to insubstantial songs. Thankfully these are the exceptions rather than the rule on a record that is well-written and well-produced enough to stand out from the pack.
