Milwaukee's The Championship are a group of men who exhibit the traits of a traditional American band. Their debut album possess echoes of Johnny Cash-style country and the earnest rock of the 1970's. Don't be fooled by the lead-off track 'This Is How It Begins', which recalls the decidedly un-American Elbow thanks to its troubled vocal and mid-paced guitar. Thereafter The Championship persevere with countrified rock; like My Morning Jacket but without the modern touches (although 'Don't Give Up On Me Now' is a notable exception). 'Hurricane' boasts a rousing, memorable chorus, 'Sympathy' features a well-crafted unwinding guitar melody but by the time of the morbid closer 'The Ballad Of Maxwell Simmons', events have taken a turn towards the darker side. Overall, 'Dance Casador!' is the type of record that will be well received in its home country but probably lacks the quirkiness to see it cross over to a worldwide audience.
