Every Kiss Takes A Minute Off Your Life

Album Reviews
A record that kicks off with samples of the Daleks from cult TV show Doctor Who could be a worrying sign for the electronica scene in its most extreme "nerdy" form. But somehow John Callaghan gets away with it, putting together a 12" release of surpising depth. That opening track ('They're Coming') also arrives with an addictive metronomic rhythm that moves along like a speeding train creating a dark, menacing techno track. Potentially even more disconcerting is 'Organgrinder' featuring highly-sped up voices (that will be familiar to fans of Bagpuss, another cult British TV show) and some vicious glitchy beats; perhaps the nearest we will ever get to a collaboration between Autechre and Pinky and Perky. And after more distorted vocals on the title track it is left to the impossibly eerie 'There's A Box In The Attic' to finalise matters. A mixed bag of ideas but there's invention and fun within the madness and questionable reference points.
