Relying almost solely on
sampling and their own fertile imagination The Avalanches have
concocted a fantastic collage of disco, easy listening, hip hop
and most other musical genres. Thrust into lesser hands it would
be a shapeless mess but the real skill here is the way in which
nearly 1,000 samples are melded into cohesive chunks; so
convincing is the task at times that the output sounds fresh and
brand new, such as the single and title track. Regardless of
whether the mood is playful ('Frontier Psychiatrist'),
melancholic ('Tonight' and its off-key piano melody) or just pure
disco heaven ('Radio', 'A Different Feeling') the hitherto
unknown or unfashionable samples are transformed into something
quite wonderful when mixed together by this six-piece from
Australia; a kind of PM Dawn for the 21st Century, if you will.
Never before has Kid Creole sounded so cutting-edge.
