Certainly not the most
predictable alliance this, but the Cardigans' frontwoman Nina
Persson and Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse renown have collaborated
to produce an hour's worth of material. 'Frequent Flyer' is the
closest A Camp get to The Cardigans nagging, yearning melodies
but it's unrepresentative of the album as a whole; the music is
quite light generally - far removed from the experimental, harsh
leanings of 'Gran Turismo' - on a selection of tracks which could
be quite easily described as alt-country but don't let that put
you off. 'Song For The Leftovers' is an excellent ballad with its
roots in Carpenters-style easy listening. Credit to Linkous for
varying the pace and style though; the rock-out of 'Hard As Stone';
'Algebra' is terrific, benefiting from its cute melodica and then
things head Portishead-wards on 'The Oddness Of The Lord'. It's
these welcome deviations which stop 'A Camp' becoming a bland
proposition. A worthwhile project then but certianly not an
essential one.
